The 2011 Lord’s Acre celebration and fund-raiser will be the best and biggest ever.
It’s easy to make grandiose claims, and since fall is far off and there’s plenty of time to get our collective act together, let’s all relax and think about donations and other preparations when the weather cools off.
Not…
The big date, Sept. 24, is just around the proverbial corner. In actuality, it’s almost exactly two months from the publication date for this edition of the Views.
The new format will include a craft fair, sponsored by Children’s Ministry; a festive lunch sponsored by Music, and the silent and live auctions, sponsored by Communications.
The big need now is for donations, and there are opportunities for everyone. Consider doing a “sign & go” dinner or event, where participants agree to pay a set amount to participate. The “sign & go” concept was introduced in 2011, and the first events have resulted in some delightful experiences and new friendships.
But wait, there’s more, much more.
Are you a DIY kind of gal or guy? Volunteer your handyperson services to the highest bidder! Do you have a vacation home or time share? Offer a week or weekend to the auction.
Perhaps you love fishing or hunting. Someone would love to go with you and pick up some tips.
Are you a crafter? Do you love to make Christmas decorations or other kinds of household décor? There are many who would love to purchase your creations.
Other hand-crafted items for adults and children, jewelry, gift baskets, dinners and events for the live auction, services (such as photography or home repair) and event-based contributions, including tickets to sports events, the zoo, family entertainment venues, stays at “destination” hotels, museum trips, and music and theater tickets are among the many popular contributions.
With the creativity and imagination of Plymouth Park UMC members, plus the gifts, skills and products of a wide variety of vendors who are purchasing booth space, the 2011 vintage Lord’s Acre will be a destination shopping experience for members of the church and community.
The new and expanded schedule will include: Vendors and Sign & Go Socials, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; meal, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; first silent auction tables, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.; second silent auction tables, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.; live auction, 1 to 2:30 p.m.; and third silent auction tables, 1:30 to 4 p.m.
Lord’s Acre planners are open to more new ideas and invite suggestions. Vendor and Donation forms are available for pick up at the church and/or can be downloaded at the bottom of this article. E-mail Rev. Dana Norton (dana@ppumc.org) with any questions.
Tickets to the Dallas Arboretum or other highlight destination make great Lord’s Acre donations.
Kid's Club starts up again on Wednesday, September 7. We have dinner at 5:45-6:30 for $5/per person, choir for 3 year olds - 6th grade at 6:30-7pm, then Bible study for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades from 7-7:45pm.
Child Care on Wednesday Nights
We have had a request for child care on Wednesday nights from 7-8pm so that parents can attend Bible study. I can extend the time if you are interested in having child care also. Just let me know and I can have the sitter here earlier or staying later.
Grandparent's Day
Bring your favorite grandparent(s) to our 2nd Annual Grandparents Day on Saturday, September 10 from 10-12 in Fellowship Hall. We will have lots of fun, games, and activities to share across the generations. I have at least one child who would like to adopt a grandparent for the day so if you know of anyone who would like to be adopted please let me know.
Acolyte Training
Acolyte training will take place on Wednesday, September 7 at 7pm in the
sanctuary for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. If your child would like to be
an acolyte please have them come along with a parent (parents need
training also) for training and to be fitted with an acolyte robe. This
is an important service to the church and it also makes Children's
Ministries more visible to those who do not have younger children
anymore. Current acolytes need to come so that we can be sure they are
still fitting into their robes or if they need new ones and so that we
know who will be participating.
Sunday School
We have lost one of our stalwart Sunday school teachers to youth and I
am in need of new teachers for both Kid Kingdom and Club 345. The
classes are 30 minutes long and I write the lessons to fit that time.
This fall we will be learning about women in the Bible: Ruth in
September, Esther in October, and Deborah in November. I gather all the
supplies needed and my experienced teachers do the lesson with 5 minutes
notice so you know they are not complicated. Please let me know if you
can help or lead any of these classes (for one week or more) any time
this month.
Sunday School Pick Up - Important! Please Read!
Several of the teachers attend 11am service but are having a hard time
getting there on time because parents are not picking up their children
in a timely manner. Please be aware of the time and pick up your
children by 10:50 so that the teachers can attend the worship service.
Thank you!
Lord's Acre Market at the Park
As you may have heard we are making some changes to Lord's Acre this
year. Adult Ministries is taking over the auctions, Music is in charge
of food, and Children's Ministry is starting a gift market. Once all is
said and done the total net profits will be divided equally among all 3
ministries. But here is where you come in - we must have volunteers to
make this happen and to make as much money as possible. This is
Children's Ministry's one fundraiser for the year and we need to make as
much as possible so that we can have all our ministry events - including
VBS. Without this money we will have to severely cut back on VBS and
eliminate some activities. Please volunteer to help on Friday,
September 23 for set up or Saturday, September 24 for the actual event.
We can't do this without YOU!!
Happy Monday! I hope everyone's first week back at school was uneventful. The kids sound excited about the school year. I think it's going to be a fantastic year!
Here's what's happening this week in Youth Ministry at PPUMC!
We're back!
Back to school means back to church! Student Outreach has begun again on Wednesday nights with a new Youth Band, new games and activities and new topics. We've got some great stuff planned for this school year. Bring your friends and come on!
The Youth Hall opens at 6 pm for playing pool or ping pong, or just hanging out with your friends before Student Outreach starts.
We've got a great new theme to kick off the school year. This week we start Superheroes: Unleashing the Hero in all of us! We're going to have a lot of fun with Super Man, Spider Man and even Lex Luthor and the Joker.
This week focus is 2 Corinthians 12: 7b - 10: Let the Weak say "I am Strong" Spider-Man, Superman and the Incredible Hulk
God does not skim off the top-the most gifted, the most articulate, the smartest, the best educated-for significance in the kingdom. He picks the screw-ups - the nobodies. He picks people like you and me.
Youth Choir
Youth Choir begins next week, September 7.
Sunday School
All the Sunday School classes are back in session as well from 10:15 am (immediately following P3) until 10:55.
The 11th and 12th graders kicked off the school year with a discussion about Truth. What is it and how does it relate to ethics and morality?
The 9th and 10th grade class started a series on the disciples - Phillip, Peter, Nathanial, Thomas and Judas. Both Middle School Guys -
6th grade and 7th and 8th grade - are using Grapple, a DVD based curriculum. The Middle School Girl's theme for the year is "Being the
Best for God."
Breakfast is served every week in the Youth Hall. Letters and a schedule went out this week. If you didn't get a letter, then your name didn't come up in the rotation this time around.
Providing breakfast on Sunday, Sept 4 is the Horsman family.
Tuesday morning Breakfast Club @ What-a-Burger
We meet early every Tuesday morning that school is in session at 7:30 am for a quick breakfast at the What-a Burger on Hwy 183 Westbound in Irving between Story and Beltline. It's a casual gathering ending with a prayer, and then it's off to school. We currently take kids to Travis Middle School. There are also a couple of vehicles that go to Mac - we'll make sure everyone gets to school on time.
For more information, contact Peg or Bill Brasch.
Student Leadership Meeting this Sunday
Leadership meets this Sunday immediately following the 11 am worship service. I realize this is Labor Day week-end. We will meet for about 45 minutes. If you have plans to go out of town, your youth is excused.
Fall Parent's Meeting Sunday, September 11
Please mark your calendar for our annual fall Parent's Meeting on September 11. We'll meet in the Fellowship Hall (the Youth Band is practicing in the Youth Hall) on Sunday, September 11, at 2 pm. We'll discuss the visions and plans for the Youth program plus the calendar for the upcoming year. Parents of the Confirmation Class of 2012 are asked to stay afterwards for a quick meeting.
See you all at the church!
Wednesday night Kid's Club activities will include:
Dinner - 5:45-6:30pm - $5.00 per person
Choir Practice - 6:30-7:00pm
Bible Study - 3rd-5th grades - Club 345 room and Activity
Room
Make plans now to attend our Wednesday night dinners. Anyone is
welcome and it is great for those who have bible study, choir or
meetings and no time to prepare dinner. We have delicious food and great
fellowship all for only $5.00 per person.
The first week menu is Grilled Hamburgers, Baked Beans, Potato Salad, and Dessert.
Dinner begins at
5:45-6:30pm.

The Bibles will be presented by a member of the Namaste Class on Sunday morning. Hunter will have hers presented at P3 and everyone else at 11am. If you don't make it to Sunday school please be sure that you are at the Sanctuary by 10:45am. The 3rd graders will all sit together until after the presentation. Bill will be available after the service for pictures. I could use the help of one or two parents on Friday night, also.

Calling all singers! The Music Ministry of Plymouth Park United
Methodist Church will be offering three sessions of "Choral Singing 101"
on Wednesdays August 17th, 24th, and 31st from 7:00-7:50 p.m. These
sessions will be sponsored by the Chancel Choir, and will be geared
towards beginners and experienced singers alike. Come have some fun
while learning about the fundamentals of good singing, including breath
support, good posture, and healthy tone production. Those who wish are
invited to sing with the choir in August, and who knows, you may want to
stay! Remember, no experience is necessary, and we welcome new singers
who may just want to learn a little about singing. Come and join us,
and bring a friend!
Calling all grandparents! Come to an event just for you and your
favorite grandkids from 10:00 am to Noon on Saturday, September 10.
We will have activities and crafts to do together as well as a snack or
two. You might even learn something about the Bible while you're here.
We have several children who do not have grandparents locally who would
like to adopt a grandparent for a day so contact Cori Bell at
cori@ppumc.org or x205 to RSVP or to be adopted.
It's time for school and that means it's time to give a special
blessing to all those who learn, teach, and support schools. All
students (pre-school through graduate school), teachers, and school
staff members are asked to bring your backpacks, school bags, and
briefcases on Sunday, August 21 to receive a back-to-school blessing in
the P3 and 11am services.
